Wyndford A. Williams Jr.: Learn French

Claim: For senior project I will attempt to learn to understand, speak and comprehend first level french.

Reason: I plan on majoring in international relations and ultimatly would like to become a diplomat so it is of the utmost importance that I learn a foreign language. I have chosen french specifically because I know that it is one of the official languages of the UN and also is a language that many know across europe, africa and asia.

Evidence: I intend on buying the first level french CD-Rom from Rossetta Stone. I can also practice what I learn with Ah-nee since she speaks french. I will also attempt to find a french immersion class. Also if I have the time in my schedule I will take a French course here at the college.

Value: This overall makes me more rounded and will one day help give me some edge when I am applying for work in the foreign service.

Mr. Asif's Guide To Keeping Your Mouth Clean

Claim: For my senior project I plan on passing on my knowledge about how to keep teeth clean, healthy, and white like Chinese rice.

Reason: I want people to realize just how important is keeping their mouths clean. The world will be a much safer place when we keep our mouths clean.

Evidence: I plan on using two of my little cousins as patients. I will make one brush his teeth after every meal and the other brush his teeth only in the morning and before bed. Both will be forced to floss and rinse with listerine. Note that they are being paid well. I will keep a journal and take photos of their teeth and show the difference. I will be sure to note discolorations, how long before gums bleed, breath odor, etc.

Value: This project will let people know the importance of keeping their mouths clean. It is estimated that only 23% of people on this planet floss daily. Brushing teeth only cleans 60% of your teeth. Flossing is supposed to clean up the other 40%. This project will help people and I will learn from it as well which will help me in the future when I become a dentist.

Alexis Barabad, Erica Rodriguez: Alcohol and Drug Prevention

Claim: For our senior project, we have decided to create two outline, one for middle school students and one for elementary students, in which we will present to them the issues on alcohol and drug abuse. The presentations are for students to become aware of the consequences of consuming drugs and alcohol. Our goal is to go present to five school which we think have issues relating to our project.

Reason: The reasons for this project are to inform the younger students about these issues and about the consequences from the consumption. We want to make them aware and hopefully make them think twice about consuming drugs and alcohol.

Evidence: At the end of the year, we want to present to at least five schools around this area. We will create fun activities to teach facts, statistics and consequences. Also, we might be able to record a presentation to present as our final product.

Value: The presentations and making a difference in a students life is a value. Less drug and alcohol abuse is something that needs to be put into practice and younger students need to be informed about them. We hope the students will think twice before abusing these substances.

Allan Lee, Chris Clausen

Claim: For my senior project, I plan to hold a music club concert along with Chris Clausen.

Reason: I want to organize the concert in order to improve my leadership and organizational skills. Also, I want to help better the community around me.

Evidence: We will hold a big concert at the end of the year to show that Music Club is serious and that Chris and I have, or will have the skills necessary to run a large scale concert. We will be holding a few smaller concerts along the way in order to gain experience in running concerts and to see if we still have any problems that we need to work out before the big concert.

Value: Holding the concert will help to improve our leadership and organization skills. The concert will also serve as a community event that will be cheap if not free. The concert will hopefully inspire the community to support funding for music programs in schools.

Christian Irian: Restoration/Forest Cleanup

Claim: For my senior project, I am going to go to the Carriage Hills area in El Sobrante and cleanup all or most of the trash dumped in the forest including old batteries, tires, car parts and household trash.

Reason: I have ridden my bicycle and dirtbike up in those hills on many different occasions and cannot stand to see the mounting piles of garbage in an otherwise beautiful habitat. The area is also some of the only land left in the area that isn't overrun with cattle or housing developments.

Evidence: I will go to the West county tax assessors office and get permission to clean and hopefully will receive a grant to pay for expenses at the dump. I will take before and after pictures of the cleanup, as well as possibly make a documentary.

Value: This will be an ongoing source of volunteer work that I will be doing which will strengthen my body, lifting heavy car parts and trash, and it will benefit the wildlife of the area as there will no longer be piles of trash lying around.

Stephany Pizano: My Senior Project

Claim: For my Senior Project I am going to learn how to play the guitar. I will learn the notes, chords and scales and then be able to play songs and melodies.

Reason: I have always wanted to learn how to play an instrument and feel that now is the time to do it.

Report Evidence: I have looked on line and found a website that shows me how to play the basic notes and chords. I also went to a music store to buy book on how to play the guitar. I have talked to my dad who will help me practice in my house, Chris Clausen who can help me learn some melodies and Joaquin Navas who can help me learn the more technical terms of notes, chords, and scales. There is also a beginning guitar class that I would like to take.

Value: I want to have a recreational activity/ hobby to release my stress on.

Sarah Chacha - AISCS: Raising Money for Hasubui

Claim: For my Senior Project, I will make presentations at African Immigrants Social and Cultural Services (AISCS) events that will benefit orphans in Shirati, Tanzania. Additionally, I will find different ways to receive donations from the public in order to raise money for an orphan, Haubui Jaji, that I met in the summer of 2009. At the end of my Senior Project, I will hold a gathering in the AA Building that will inform people at our school about AISCS and what we aim to achieve. This gathering will include the President and Founder of the organization, Christine Chacha, Treasurer, Prof. Laura Mason, and other members of the organization who are willing to inform the school about their experiences in Tanzania.

Reason: The reason as to why I chose this topic and project is to inform the general public and my peers of this non-profit organization, and why they should take part in it. Additionally, I became very close to Hasubui and I would love to make a difference in his life, so he can have a great future, especially in education. Education is very expensive in Tanzania; thus, if I raise money for Hasubui, he can go to school and better his life.

Evidence: I will present my earnings and the members of the organization in the AA building at the end of the year. I will also have pictures and log hours to present the time and work I out into raising money for Hasubui.

Value: This project will help me to become more involved in my community and the organization in which I take part in. Furthermore, once I become a pediatrician (in the future), I would love to be able to help orphans, like Hasubui, in Africa through health care as well as funding.

Ariyana Wilson: Drugs amd Alcohol

Claim: For my senior project I am going to interview people who are ex drug and alcohol abusers and find out exactly what lead them to using drugs and alcohol.

Reason: I am doing this because I have always wanted to know why people used drugs and how they felt while using them. Also I want to become a lawyer some day and there are a lot of crimes committed because people are addicted to drugs so I am doing this to find out what leads people to using drugs and drinking alcohol.

Evidence: I am going to show a powerpoint of drug and alcohol related things and also play my interviews and make posters which will be giving more information on drugs and alcohol.

Value: This is a learning process for me because it will help me to have more knowledge about these things and I can help others by teaching them what I know and hopefully this will stop others from going down the road of using drugs and drinking alcohol.

Andrew Chui, Roger Yee: Cleaning Robot

Claim: For our senior project we will design and produce two robots whose purpose is to clean an assortment of classrooms and store recyclable objects for later recycling .

Reason: Since both Roger and I share mechanical engineering as our major this project will develop fundamental skills for our later careers in the engineering field. Also with producing these robots we may help our school Middle College High School from being blamed for the trash and messy state of the campus which we learn on. Also the robots may harbor cameras which will add another set of eyes to catch any graffiti or trash causing culprit.

Evidence: At the end of the year we will hold a presentation of our robot's ability to collect and clean an assortment of college classrooms. We will also provide prototypes of the actual robot to show our process of building the actual robots. There may also be a video of our progress throughout the project.

Value: The process of building the robots and our end product, the robots themselves, will provide us with an insight to the field which we both would enjoy to work in. These two robots will also stay at the Contra Costa College campus under the care of Middle College High School cleaning classrooms and possibly extending the range of support to different activities. Our robots will increase the efficiency of cleaning the classrooms and provide a new insight to the new generation. We hope that our innovation will inspire younger Middle College High School students into the field of Engineering.
